One angler, Jerry Kruse of Long Beach, got four of those big yellows by flylining sardines. He posed with the best brace. ???It was nice at Cedros Island,??? said skipper Toussaint, ???and there was some great fishing on the surface iron. The bank was good; we scratched out a decent catch.???

Denny Walker

The trip???s jackpot winner had what is likely the biggest yellowtail to come from the Benitos, a 65-pound mossback caught by Denny Walker of Phoenix, who posed with second skipper Kyle ???Rooster??? Karcher. Walker flylined a sardine on a 3/0 Mustad hook, 30-pound Izorline and a rental outfit with a Penn 500 reel and a Seeker seven-foot glass rod. ???I had to fight him for a long time,??? said Walker, ???a long 15 or 20 minutes. He almost had me over the side, at one point.???

We started trolling early in the AM, and came across a kelp paddy that produced a few smaller-grade yellows. For small fish these guys pull pretty hard!

Zippy drove a long way to fish on this trip. He is from Santa Cruz where he is a regular on the Velocity. This was his first time fishing in San Diego, and his first yellowtail. It was good meeting you Zippy and I look forward to seeing you on future SFR charters!
